Location Independent Digital Nomad Minimalist Unschooling Roadschooling Contrarians

Since we have decided to sell everything we own and travel across the country for a year, I have done some research.

It turns out we are not the only crazy people in the world.  Not by a long shot.  In fact, there are many people who have chosen to do this as a lifestyle.

I have learned many new terms in relation to contrarian lifestyles that buck the norms and embrace the freedom of no address and very few belongings.

Here is a short glossary:

Location Independent:   the freedom to travel and live wherever you choose while working from that location.

Location Rebel: a person who refuses to settle into one place as “home”-the world is their home

Digital Nomads: are individuals that leverage digital technologies to perform their work duties, and more generally conduct their lifestyle in a nomadic manner. Such workers typically work remotely—from home, coffee shops and public libraries to collaborate with teams across the globe.

Minimalist:  a minimalist lifestyle is one that is free of complications, clutter, confusion and distraction. Its where you have taken your life and streamlined it to make it the most effecient it can possibly be. (For many this includes having very few belongings.)

Unschooling:  a range of educational philosophies and practices centered on allowing children to learn through their natural life experiences.

Roadschooling: same as homeschooling but on the road-not from a one-location home -an educational alternative to public school and involves the education of children using the resources of a country or state as a database of information for teaching.

Contrarian: A contrarian is a person who takes up a position opposed to that of the majority, no matter how unpopular.

I find these labels reassuring.  I like the idea that other people are “contrarian” like us.  They are choosing not to live a normal life.

I don’t necessarily think contrarian is better-but I do think it’s us.   I do think we will be happy living on the road.

Who knows how many of these labels of lifestyles will stick, but for now we will try them all on.
